In 2019, the number of migrants died while crossings the Mediterranean Sea equaled to 1.9 thousand. In fact, the Mediterranean Sea recorded worldwide the largest number of deaths and missing cases of people who migrated. However, recording the deaths in the Mediterranean Sea represents a challenge. It was estimated that between 2014 and 2018, about 12 thousand people who drowned while on this migration route were never found.
Moreover, 2016 was the year in which the number of fatalities peaked. According to data, 5.1 thousand migrants died in the Mediterranean Sea. In the same year, a total of eight thousand people died worldwide in the attempt to migrate . Overall, the Central Mediterranean Route recorded roughly 4.6 thousand deaths in 2016, representing the most fatal route for migrants.
